Have you ever thought the price of vanilla is out of sight?! Well here is the recipe for making your own. All vanilla has alcohol in it (yes even the fake stuff) and will cook out when used in baking or a hot dish.
1 bottle cheap vodka
3-4 vanilla beans - the price is worth the amount you will get.
Open the vodka and remove about 1/4 cup. Save the tasting until the end, you will want to pour some of this back in the bottle.
Split the vanilla beans lengthwise. Scrap out the seeds in the middle. Carefully put all of the pods and the seeds in the vodka bottle. Pour in the vodka you removed. If you've sampled it already that is ok. Tighltly screw on the lid. Shake the bottle vigorously. Set aside for two weeks remembering to shake is every day or so. Shake before use.
Do not discard the old pods once you near the end of the bottle. Just buy more vanilla beans and vodka and add to the bottle.
